This year’s Peace Operations Course (POC) successfully ended at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) on Friday, 2 June 2023. The 2-week course was aimed at creating a platform for professional and key personalities with diverse exposure to peace operations to share their experience with participants. It also sought to expose the participants to a critical understanding of the concept and practice of peace operations in an international setting.
At the closing ceremony, Brigadier General Daniel Frimpong (Rtd) who was the Guest of Honour, stressed the importance of such realistic practical training, as part of the overall capacity-building strategy for peace operations. He pointed out that the changing nature of armed conflicts across the globe required that the planning and execution of activities within Peace support theatres should be done jointly and in an integrated manner. He further explained that the course would help the participants to appreciate the nature and evolution of peace operations in response to the changing conflict dynamics in contemporary times and would also help to draw their attention to command, staff, and leadership challenges in the field.
Brig Gen Frimpong (Rtd) expressed his belief that participants would grow together into a generation of leaders who are well-equipped and positioned to be able to handle the challenges of peace operations since the course afforded them the opportunity to engage with the best in the field and tap from their experience.
The Peace Operations Course is one of the modules organized under GAFCSC’s Master of Science Degree in Defence and International Politics (MDIP). Participants of this year’s course included 85 regular students of the Senior Division, made up of 61 Ghanaian officers and 24 officers from 11 allied African countries. There were also 13 students from the MDIP weekend class and 13 external participants from other Security Services, Governmental Agencies, and some Media houses in Ghana.
