Militaries all over the world have increasingly been assuming greater roles to include contributing their quota to the socio-economic development of their people. This is in addition to discharging their traditional roles of defending the territorial integrity of their countries and providing physical security for their people.

STUDENTS OF JUNIOR DIVISION COURSE 72 AND STAFF DEPARTING AIR FORCE BASE ACCRA

It is believed that the military can only make meaningful contributions to the socio-economic development of their countries when they are familiar with the environment. It is against this background that Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College Junior Division Course 72 as part of the course package embarked on a 5-day Environmental Study Tour (EST) of the Upper West Region for the period Sunday 22- Friday 27 September 2019.

 The objective of the package (EST) is to assess some current topical environmental issues within the Country, identifying problem areas and recommending solutions.

Thematic Areas for the Study Tour included:

  1. Smuggling of fertilizer.
  2. Highway robbery.
  3. Operation of Tricycle by teenagers.
  4. Illegal felling of Rosewood.

Areas visited during the tour included

  1. The palace of the Overlord of Wa Traditional Area.

On Mon 23 Sep 19, the Team paid a courtesy call on the overlord of Wa Traditional Area. The Team proceeded to the Regional Coordinating Council and was received by the Regional Minister, Hon Hafiz Bin Salih. Later in the day, the Team proceeded to the Wa Municipal Assembly.

On Day 2 of the visit, the Team visited Lawra Municipal and Sissala West District Assemblies.

On Day 4 of the tour, Students interacted with locals within the Wa Municipality to seek their views on the thematic areas. The day was climax with a debrief at the Upper West Regional Residency.

The EST for Junior Division Course 72 to the Upper West Region was generally successful. Students will write a report to include their observations and recommendations on the tour which the College will submit to the appropriate authority for action.
