Major General Jackson Wonje (ESQ)

Leadership profile of the Commandant of GAFCSC, covering operational experience, instructional appointments, peacekeeping service, and academic development.

A career shaped by command, instruction, and operational service.

Maj Gen Jackson Wonje was enlisted into the Ghana Military Academy in 1990 and was commissioned into the Infantry Corps on 14 August 1992. He has served in various capacities in the Ghana Armed Forces.

These include Platoon Commander and A/Officer Commanding at the 5th Infantry Battalion. He served as platoon Commander, Adjutant and Officer Commanding Special Investigations Branch at Ghana Military Police and as GSO III at the Support Services Brigade.

Other appointments include Directing Staff - GAFCSC (Jnr Div) from September 2009 to August 2010, Directing Staff - GAFCSC (Snr Div) from September 2011 to August 2012, and Directing Staff - Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Nigeria from August September 2012 to September 2014.

Leadership appointments across training, doctrine, and multinational environments.

He was the first Command Operations Officer of the newly established Northern Command from October 2014 to July 2016. Maj Gen Jackson Wonje later served as Course Director at KAIPTC from July 2016 to November 2016 and as Commander of Operation Vanguard from August 2018 to January 2019.

From January 2019 to January 2021 he was Chief Instructor - Army Faculty at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College. He was then seconded to the Rwanda Defence Force Command and Staff College as Director of Studies and Head, Research and Development from February 2021 to March 2023.

He subsequently served as the Assistant Commandant - Research and Doctrine at the Ghana Armed Forces Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) from March 2023 to July 2023, and as Chief of Staff, Ghana Boundary Commission from August 2023 to June 2024. Before his current appointment as Acting Commandant, he was the Provost Marshal, Ghana Armed Forces.

Professional education, legal training, and personal interests.

Maj Gen Wonje has completed all career progression courses commensurate with his rank. These include the Intelligence Officers Course, Young Officers’ Course, Military Police Investigator Course, Crisis Negotiation Course at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Combat Team Commanders’ Course, Junior Staff Course and Senior Command and Staff Course at GAFCSC.

He also attended the Transnational Organised Crime Course at the Marshal Centre in Germany and has extensive peacekeeping experience with missions in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Lebanon, Western Sahara and Cote d’Ivoire.

Academically, he holds both Post Graduate Certificate and Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration from GIMPA, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) (Hons) from the University of London, UK and a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Ghana. He was called to the bar in 2018.
