A foundation built through military education and operational appointments.
Brig Gen GKT Sam was born on 11 November 1972 in Accra. He attended Ghana National College, Cape Coast between September 1984 and June 1991, enlisted into the Ghana Armed Forces, entered the Ghana Military Academy on 01 November 1991 and was commissioned into the Infantry Corps on 20 August 1993.
He has served largely in training establishments and has held command and operational staff appointments throughout his career. He was a Platoon Commander, Intelligence Officer and Support Company Commander in 2 Infantry Battalion, Takoradi.
He later served as ADC to Army Commander and Staff Officer with GHQ (DI), and also held appointments as Instructor at the Ghana Military Academy, Assistant Director Army Operations at Army Headquarters, and Directing Staff at both the Junior and Senior Divisions of GAFCSC.
Command, intelligence, and multinational peacekeeping leadership.
Brig Gen Sam was Commanding Officer of 2 Infantry Battalion between 2012 and 2016. He afterwards held the appointments of Director Counter Intelligence and Director Operational Intelligence with GHQ (DI).
He also served as Command Operations Officer at HQ Southern Command and Deputy Commander, Ghana Military Academy. His most recent appointment before assuming office at GAFCSC was Chief, Strategic Military Threat Assessments (P5) at UN Headquarters, New York, between May 2021 and May 2025.
Within peacekeeping operations, Brig Gen Sam has served with UNAMIR in Rwanda, ECOMOG in Liberia and Sierra Leone, UNIFIL in Lebanon, UNMIL in Liberia and MONUSCO in DR Congo. His last mission appointment was Commanding Officer, MONUSCO Ghanbatt 10.

Academically, he holds the following qualifications:
- Post Graduate Certificate in Public Administration, Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, Accra, 2003.
- Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration (with Distinction), 2007.
- BSc (Hons), Administration (Human Resource Management Option), University of Ghana, 2007.
- Master of Arts in International Affairs and Diplomacy, University of Ghana, Legon, 2010.
- Military Master of Science (Strategic Studies), Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, 2020.
Brig Gen Sam has attended all courses commensurate with his rank both in Ghana and overseas, including India, the United States, France, Kenya and China. His last career course was the Defense and Strategic Studies Course at the International College of Defense Studies in Beijing, China between September 2019 and August 2020.
In his spare time, Brig Gen Sam loves watching soccer and news. He is an avid reader, enjoys keeping fit, and is a committed Arsenal FC fan.
He is happily married to Dansoa and their union is blessed with two boys.
