CHIEF OF THE ARMY STAFF OUTLINES VISION FOR THE GHANA ARMY AT GAFCSC
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, was at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) on Wednesday, 29 October 2025 as part of the Land Combat Power Week to interact with students on his vision for the Ghana Army.
Major General Gbetanu outlined his strategic vision for the Ghana Army for the period 2026 to 2030. The vision aims to transform the Army into a modern, agile, and technologically advanced Service capable of delivering operational excellence across all its operations. His vision is anchored on four key pillars — professional development, modernisation, innovation and welfare improvement.
The Chief of Army Staff emphasised that by 2030, the Ghana Army should be fully equipped with modern logistics and digital systems to support joint operations and peacekeeping missions, while maintaining a robust presence to protect Ghana’s territorial integrity. Major General Gbetanu noted that modernisation efforts will focus on technology integration, intelligence-led operations and enhanced combat readiness to enable the Army to effectively respond to evolving security threats, both internal and external.
On personnel development, the Chief of Army Staff underscored the need to build strategic leaders and adaptive commanders capable of managing complex security environments. He emphasised continuous training, ethical leadership and education as essential tools for shaping the new generation of officers who must embody discipline, professionalism and innovation.

Major General Gbetanu encouraged the students of Senior Command and Staff Course 47 to align their leadership approach with his vision and to be ambassadors of transformation within the Ghana Army. He reminded them that Leadership development by way of promotions and appointments will be continuous, transparent, and merit-based.
The Acting Commandant of GAFCSC, Brigadier General Jackson Wonje, in his remarks, expressed profound appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff for visiting the College and sharing his vision. He stated that such engagements inspire the students and reaffirm the College’s commitment to producing officers capable of advancing the Army’s modernisation agenda. He presented a plaque to the COAS as a gesture of appreciation.
