GAFCSC NAVAL FACULTY CONDUCTS EDUCATIONAL VISIT TO VOLTA RIVER AUTHORITY

The Naval Faculty of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) paid a 2-day educational visit to Akosombo and Ada on 25th and 26th February respectively. The team comprising 12 students and 2 Directing Staff was led by the Chief Instructor Naval Faculty, Naval Captain Kwasi Kyeremateng Donkor.

The purpose of the visit was to acquaint the students with firsthand information on the causes of incessant accidents that occur on the Volta Lake with the view to proffering appropriate remedies to prevent such unfortunate accidents from reoccurring.

During the briefing session at Akosombo, the Commander of the Naval Detachment deployed on the Hydro-Electric Dam of the Volta River Authority (VRA) highlighted on their duties and responsibilities amidst other social activities they conduct to enhance their civil-military relationship. He also emphasized on the support and cordial relationship they have with the management of VRA which has resulted to the successes of their operational activities.

The team then proceeded to the Volta Lake Transport Company where they were briefed on the history, duties and strategic purpose of establishing the river transport company. The Lake Transport company stated their vision to be the safest and accident-free medium of transportation of goods and services on the Volta Lake. The team interacted with the staff during the tour of their facilities and clear their doubts.

On the second day, the team paid a courtesy call on Commodore Solomon Asiedu-Larbi, the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC) at the Command HQ at Nutekpor. Although a training institution, it was emphasized that the Command offer support to some government and private entities of which Electrochem Songor Company was cited as an example.

The team later in the day had a conducted tour of the Electrochem Songor Company; a salt mining company established as part of MacDan Group of Companies at Ada. The main focus of company is to supply a 100% pure salt to the global market. It currently produces 1.2 million tonnes of salt per anum against the current demand of over 5 million tonnes.

The company indicated that 90% of its workforce is made up of natives as part of the company's social policy and that it relies solely on sea water to produce the salt. Staff and students were then taken through the processes of the formation and production of salt. The entire visit was successful and incident free.
