MARITIME COMBAT WEEK: SCSC 47 VISITS SEKONDI-TAKORADI FOR SEA EXERCISE

The Senior Command and Staff Course 47 of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) on Thursday, 23 October 2025, visited the Western Naval Command in Sekondi-Takoradi as part of activities marking the 2025 Maritime Combat Week. The visit formed part of the College’s practical training programme, aimed at exposing participants to real-time naval operations and enhancing their understanding of maritime security in Ghana’s territorial waters.

The day began with a detailed briefing on naval operations, after which the students embarked on a sea trip aboard three navalso vessels. The trip gave Course 47 members the opportunity to experience navigation techniques, ship control and communication systems used in coordinating activities at sea. Many participants described the trip as both thrilling and enlightening, deepening their appreciation of the challenges faced by naval personnel in maintaining maritime safety.

A major highlight of the event was the firing exercise, where participants witnessed live demonstrations of the Navy’s combat readiness and operational efficiency. The firing drills, conducted under strict safety protocols, showcased the Ghana Navy’s precision, teamwork and professionalism in handling maritime threats.

An interesting cultural element of the visit was the waving of headgear — a traditional naval greeting exchanged when ships pass or officers meet at sea. This symbolic gesture, representing respect, unity and camaraderie, was warmly demonstrated and explained to the visiting officers.

The visit ended with remarks of appreciation from both Course 47 participants and the Naval Command, reaffirming the importance of inter-service collaboration, leadership training and the continuous strengthening of Ghana’s defence capabilities.

The Maritime Combat Week continues to serve as a vital platform for knowledge sharing, practical learning and the promotion of maritime excellence within the Ghana Armed Forces.
